Crib Mattress Safety Guidlines

Knowledge is the key to success. Ease your fears and learn how to keep your baby safe in the crib.

What is safe?

Creating a secure sleep environment for your baby is of utmost importance, and selecting the right crib mattress plays a significant role in achieving this. Follow these safety guidelines when choosing a mattress:

1. Prefer New Over Used: When it comes to crib mattresses, it's advisable to steer clear of second-hand options whenever possible. Used mattresses can pose risks due to potential mold, bacteria buildup, and wear and tear. This is particularly important if you lack information about the mattress's history. If you plan to reuse a crib mattress from a previous child, ensure there are no openings in the waterproof cover where mold may have developed. Additionally, check that the mattress remains firm and supportive, without any signs of sagging.

2. Maintain an Empty Crib: Although decorative items like pillows, bumpers, stuffed animals, and blankets may seem charming, they should never be placed in a baby's crib. These items can accidentally cover your baby's face and pose a suffocation hazard. For a safe sleep environment, stick to using a fitted sheet only, and consult the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for comprehensive safe sleep guidelines.

3. Back to Sleep: The safest sleeping position for your baby is on their back. This practice significantly reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), which is the leading cause of infant mortality in the first year of life.

4. Check Before Flipping the Mattress: If your crib mattress has two sides, it's essential to consult your pediatrician before deciding to flip it over to the toddler side. Most parents typically make this switch when their children reach around 12 months of age.

Babies spend up to 16 hours a day sleeping, 8 of those hours are at night.

When to adjust the crib mattress height?

According to the AAP, most accidents involving falls occur when a baby attempts to climb out of their crib. Therefore, it's crucial to lower the crib mattress as your baby becomes more mobile. Here's a guideline for when to adjust the mattress height:

• During infancy, use the crib on its highest mattress height setting to make it easy to place your baby in and out of the crib.

• As soon as your baby can sit up, lower the mattress to a level where they cannot fall out by leaning against the crib's side or pulling themselves over it.

• Adjust the mattress to its lowest position before your child becomes capable of standing.

By following these safety guidelines, you can ensure a secure and comfortable sleep environment for your baby.
